Chrome-free leather lining in all ANGULUS kids shoes

The lining and insoles of all ANGULUS kids shoes are made with vegetable tanned leather, making them chrome-free. The rest of the leather on the shoe, which is not in direct contact with the foot, is mostly chrome tanned to ensure a more durable and resilient shoe.

Phasing out chrome-tanned leather lining in ANGULUS women's and men's shoes

We are in the process of phasing out chrome in the leather lining of our women's and men's shoes. In the production of SS25 (in stores spring 2025), approximately 90% of the leather lining in our women's and men's shoes is chrome-free. From the production of AW25 (in stores fall 2025) all leather lining in our shoes will be chrome-free. This is a rather extensive process, and as both our retailers and we ourselves have stock of ANGULUS shoes from previous seasons, you may still find ANGULUS women's and men's shoes with chrome in the lining for some time. The rest of the leather, which is not in direct contact with the foot, is mostly chrome-tanned to ensure a more durable and resilient shoe.

    Leather tanning

To improve the quality of the leather before shoe production, it is tanned. We use both chrome tanned and vegetable tanned leather for ANGULUS shoes.

    Chrome tanned leather

Chrome is a chemical element used in chrome tanning. This process involves the use of chrome salts (primarily chromium(III) sulfate) to stabilize the leather, giving it desirable properties such as flexibility, durability, and resistance to water and heat.

The chrome tanned leather we use in our production is tanned within legal limits. Our chrome tanned leather is exclusively produced and processed within the EU, ensuring compliance with the strict regulations set by the EU's REACH regulation and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. For example, according to the EU's REACH regulation, chromium 6 (chromium VI), which can lead to allergic reactions and is harmful to the environment, is not allowed.

    Vegetable tanned leather

In vegetable tanning, tannins from plants are used, which are natural and biodegradable, reducing environmental impact compared to chrome tanning, which involves chemicals. Vegetable tanned leather is not as durable as chrome tanned leather. Each piece of vegetable tanned leather is unique, giving the shoe an individual and authentic character, which can develop a beautiful patina over time.
Vegetable tanned leather is often less likely to cause allergic reactions, as it does not contain the same chemicals as chrome tanned leather. This makes it a good choice for people with sensitive skin.
